What is Freemasonry?

Let us start by explaining what it is not.
It is not a Secret Society.

There are many ways to find out details of Freemasonry via the Internet or by using the CONTACT page in this Website.  However a short precis is provided below.

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations.

Freemasonry brings together men from differing and diverse backgrounds, where the daily pressures of modern life can be left outside the door and where friendship prevails.

Perhaps Freemasonry can be best explained by considering the 3 principles on which it is founded.   Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth or to put them in more modern language : Friendship, Support and Integrity.

Freemasonry is a fraternal association of men of good will and high values and is sometimes described as an organisation that “makes good men better men”.

Every candidate for Freemasonry must affirm a belief in a single Supreme Being. This belief is a matter for the individual and Freemasonry recognises each person’s own beliefs. Religion, along with politics is NEVER discussed within the Lodge. Each member is free to pursue his religious convictions in a manner best suited to him.

Freemasonry welcomes men who seek harmony with their fellow man and who wish to take part in making the world a better place to live for everyone.

Freemasonry as an organisation exists in most countries of the World and it follows that a Freemason can find the fellowship of freemasons in other countries in his travels abroad.

It is also true, as in other aspects of life, that a man gets out of Freemasonry what he puts into it.

Freemasonry was founded as a male-only society, though there are now parallel “Orders of Women Freemasons” in the UK and abroad.
